Building Student Empathy & Perspectives
What is the workshop about?
While many schools focus on the important skills we need our students to have to be successful outside of school, we should also be concerned with what exactly our students will do when they leave us! This workshop will focus on creating empathetic, action-orientated students, who will not only have the skills needed to be successful, but the heart to want to make the world a better place. All participants will be able to curate resources linked to current local and global issues to incorporate in their classroom teaching. They will create lessons and activities which are focussed on students practicing empathetic action.
Session 1: Sunday, Oct 4th, 4pm – 6pm IST
Session 2: Sunday, Oct 11th, 4pm – 6pm IST
Session 3: Sunday, Oct 18th, 4pm – 6pm IST
What will you learn?
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand and explain the importance of an empathy focussed classroom.
- Curate relevant resources linked to current local and global issues for student engagement.
- Design activities, lessons and units which are focussed on students developing empathy, which will lead to them taking action
What will you create?
Each workshop at Highr involves a classroom showcase activity which the participants create to use in their own classrooms or for their own teaching practice. Here’s what you’ll create in this workshop:
Classroom activities using thinking routines linked to perspective taking, using photos of current events
A new unit, including creating a class contract, curating resources and creating activities linked to empathy and creating opportunities for students to take action
Create an activity to bring global and local issues alive in school, outside of your classrooms
Who should attend?
This workshop would benefit secondary school teachers, school leaders, academic and pastoral coordinators, instructional and curriculum designers
